Celebrating Success: June 2024 Bachelor State Exams

In the Czech Republic, the final bachelor exams (commonly known as the state bachelor exams) are a key part of university life, marking the end of years of hard work and dedication. This year, on June 5th and 6th, the UNYP School of International Relations hosted the largest number of candidates in its history, with nine outstanding students taking the exams. This milestone highlights the increasing interest in higher education and the quality of our academic programs. These exams are not just the last requirement or another obstacle that students must overcome to obtain their bachelor’s degree. In fact, they are much more than that; they are a valuable pedagogical tool that helps to increase the quality of the program.

The bachelor exams are designed to thoroughly test students’ knowledge in their chosen fields. They ensure that, after semesters of study, our graduates are well-prepared for their careers or further studies. These exams cover a wide range of topics, requiring students to apply their learning practically and integratively. It is not just a question of remembering names, definitions, theories, or dates, but being able to use that knowledge by linking and applying it to cases, developments, or situations. This provides us, as educators, with a lot of information about the effectiveness of our teaching and helps us take the necessary steps to continue improving the academic quality of the program.

One of the most valuable aspects of these exams is the opportunity for students to showcase their academic abilities and skills. Each candidate presents their thesis, a significant research project they have worked on during their final year. This project allows students to explore a topic in depth, develop research skills, and contribute new ideas to their field. Presenting and defending their thesis in front of a panel of examiners pushes students to actively work on their communication skills and their capacity to manage stressful situations.

The exams also help to create a sense of community. This is one of the last times when faculty and students come together in an academic setting. It is an opportunity for students to meet again with instructors who taught them at the beginning of their studies. Faculty members can also see the evolution of their students and how much they have grown academically since they first met them in a classroom. Students might not realize it, but there is a strong sense of pride and joy as candidates demonstrate their capacities and overcome this last challenge successfully.

In summary, the Bachelor Final State Exams are a vital part of Czech university tradition, representing academic excellence, comprehensive education, and community building. The record number of candidates this year shows the importance and appeal of these exams. As we look to the future, we are committed to continuing this tradition, ensuring that our graduates thrive and make meaningful contributions to society. Congratulations 2024 graduates, your achievements have made us very proud!
