This November, UNYP is proud to support Czech veterans by becoming an official donation site for the first time. To show solidarity, you’re invited to pick up a poppy at the reception or from the office to wear as a symbol of respect. Alongside the poppies, posters around campus share inspiring stories of veterans who served during critical moments in history. Even if you don’t have coins on hand for a donation, feel free to wear a poppy to honor these remarkable individuals.
One of the veterans we commemorate this year is Vera Binevska-Holubeva. Born in 1929 in Ukraine to a Czech family, Vera and her sister Vanda joined the army during World War II as teenagers. At only 16, Vanda became a sniper, while Vera served as a radio operator and was one of the youngest participants in the brutal Battle of Dukla. After the war, Vera returned to Prague in 1993, where she remains an emblem of courage and resilience.
To further recognize these heroes, there will be a Veterans’ Day program on November 11, hosted by Prague 2 Municipality at Náměstí Míru—just a short walk from UNYP. Pick up a poppy at the UNYP reception to show your support for these extraordinary veterans, contribute to aid for them, and help preserve their stories for future generations.
