The past several months have been a time of transition at Empire State University’s European hub in Prague. As the recently appointed Director of European Programs, now in my fifth month in this role, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the energy and possibility that define our academic community. While we look ahead to exciting developments, we also take a moment to reflect on those who have left an enduring mark on our programs.
It was with deep sadness that we were forced to acknowledge the untimely passing of Dr. Ronnie Mathers, a cherished member of our faculty. Dr. Mathers was not only an exceptional educator but also a mentor and friend to many. He supervised hundreds of Empire students in Prague, leading them to the successful completion of their senior thesis. His passion for scholarship and commitment to his students resonated through his work, and his absence is felt profoundly by faculty and students.
At the same time, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Sheila Aird, who recently retired as Director of European Programs. Dr. Aird dedicated eight years of service to students and faculty across our European campuses. Her leadership helped strengthen Empire State University’s presence in Europe, ensuring our students had a global academic experience. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Aird for her dedication and wish her all the best.
Looking ahead, Empire State University is entering a dynamic new phase. Having passed the magical 100,000 number of alumni, the university continues to grow and prosper. A priority in the coming months is deepening our connection with our alumni community. Empire State University graduates are making an impact in various industries worldwide, and we are eager to explore more opportunities for engagement.
Along with students, we are thrilled to welcome more esteemed professors to our global network, bringing fresh perspectives and enriching our curriculum. These scholars not only contribute to our classrooms, but also further strengthen our academic ties across borders. In February Prague students and faculty had the opportunity to interact with visiting psychology and development scholar Dr. Dan Nyaronga, and in May Dr. Jenny Mincin will be bringing her outstanding research and practical experience in crisis intervention, disaster human services, humanitarian aid, refugees, and community rebuilding and recovery to our classrooms in a special intensive course open to all students.
As we navigate this period of change, our commitment to academic excellence and international collaboration remains steadfast. Empire State University and University of New York in Prague continue to be a hub for intellectual exchange, cultural enrichment, and professional growth. I look forward to working with students, faculty, and alumni to build upon our strong foundation and usher in an exciting new era.
