How to Wind Down for the Holidays after a Challenging Semester

This submission takes a different approach from our usual focus on preparing for challenging or stressful situations. This time, we’re offering tips on how to unwind, de-stress, and fully enjoy your holidays—especially after a demanding study period or tough work schedule.

After all, our dedication to academic or work excellence has paid off, and we’re proud of our achievements. However, it often takes intentional effort to unwind and let go of the performance adrenaline that fueled our recent successes.

You’ve earned your time off—a chance to relax and recharge for the challenges ahead. So, how can you quickly make the most of this time to slow down, recoup, and regroup?

The therapy group Talk Space offers practical tips for finding calm and relaxation. In his online article, Famous Erwin, LMHC, LPC (reviewed by Bisma Anwar, LMHC), focuses on workplace stress. We’ve adapted his advice to better fit the university setting, narrowing his original eleven tips down to six key strategies:

  1. Physical Exercise: Exercise is a cornerstone of stress relief, as it releases endorphins, boosts mood, and regulates blood pressure. Cardiovascular exercises, resistance training, and flexibility/stretching (like yoga or Pilates) are excellent options.
  2. Socialize: Humans are social creatures, and sharing thoughts or joys with others has proven therapeutic effects. Quality social interactions with family or friends release oxytocin and serotonin, which improve mood and mental well-being.
  3. Meditation: Meditation is a simple way to relax and focus on the present. Pair it with breathing exercises to reduce stress hormones, support emotional balance, and improve sleep (see Tip 5).
  4. Aromatherapy: Soothing scents like lavender, orange, and sandalwood can quickly calm your mind. Aromatherapy is affordable, easy to incorporate, and creates a relaxing atmosphere without requiring full attention.
  5. Quality Sleep: Rest is critical for both physical and mental health. Follow a regular sleep schedule, avoid screens in bed, and practice good “bedroom hygiene” to enhance the quality of your sleep.
  6. Engage in Fun Activities: Focus on positive, leisure activities and avoid anything resembling work. Play games, enjoy music or movies, spend time outdoors, or grab coffee with friends—whatever brings you joy.

While holidays should be a time to unwind, it’s easy to carry stress from the semester into your break, limiting its therapeutic benefits. Take time to celebrate your accomplishments, but also focus on recharging. A clear mind and renewed energy will prepare you to tackle the next academic term with confidence!
